The Drama Club of Anatolia College presents this year one of the greatest musicals ever, “Grease”, by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, on January 29, 30, 31 and on February 5, 6, and 7 at 9:00pm at Raphael Hall.
This year’s performance has 23 actors and a 5-member rock and roll band that play live the songs of the musical, such as the unforgettable “You are the one that I want” and “Summer nights”. The play is directed by the club’s advisor Mr. Angelos Klonaris and the choreography was designed by Ms. Lenia Tsigeridou.

The movie was originally released in 1978 and received five Golden Globe Award nominations in 1979 and was the highest grossing (US) movie of 1978. It also ranked number 21 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the ‘50 Best High School Movies’ and was voted the best musical ever on Channel 4's ‘100 greatest musicals’. The musical involves a love story in the late ‘50s between two different types: the “cool” and tough Danny, and Sandy, the “good girl”, who each belong to different social groups and cannot reveal their love.
According to the director, “this year’s performance will try to restore the satirical spirit of the original stage musical (1972) that was missing from the movie. The typical naïve and – sometimes, silly – teddy boys of the ‘50s are lively described. At the same time, we can see the cruelty of teens that make the girl’s life very difficult and do not allow her to become member of a group”.

The Drama Club of Anatolia College has been presenting musicals for the last 37 years and it is the hotbed of many known actors. In the past few years it has presented, among others, the “Little Shop of Horrors” (1998), “Chicago” (2009), “Mamma Mia!” (2004), “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” (2007), etc.
“Grease” was originally presented in 1998 at Anatolia College by former teacher Tom Stone and created something of a scandal. Vassiliki Trypani had undertaken the musical direction and Ms. Teresa Platidou the choreography. This year’s performance is dedicated to our teacher, Tom Stone. |
